CV preparation and advice

When writing your CV it is important to dedicate time to ensuring it presents you in the best possible light. Your CV will be the first point of contact with any prospective employers and so it needs to convince the person reading it that you are the best candidate for the position and you have what it takes to be a success in the role you are applying for.

Please find below a few points to consider when writing your CV:

Ensure you include your full name and contact details so that consultants or employers can contact you easily.
Ensure you provide full details of your education and professional qualifications including dates, grades and subjects.
List all the software and systems you have had exposure to. Recent and relevant systems experience is very important in today's market.
Highlight any language skills you may have as this is increasingly important in today's global market.
Highlight any specialist knowledge you may have acquired such as IFRS, US GAAP or systems implementation.
Be concise when detailing your experience but do go into some detail. For example, if you were responsible for bank reconciliations then detail how many bank accounts you were responsible for and if they were multi-currency. If you were responsible for group consolidations detail how many companies were in the group and what size and type of companies these were.
Do not be afraid to sell your skills and experience and highlight your achievements in your career. These achievements will ensure you stand out against other candidates.
Ensure you explain any gaps in employment clearly and do not omit any period of employment for whatever reason.
Be truthful with facts as these will be checked by employers and recruitment consultants alike.
Do not insert any graphics or photos into your CV as this often dilutes the content of the document.
Your CV should be clear and easy to read so avoid using decorative fonts. Times New Roman or Arial are generally accepted business fonts.
Avoid using jargon and acronyms specific to your role or industry as your CV may not initially be sent through to a finance contact who would understand the terms and phrases used.
Tailor your CV for each role you apply for as some skills and experience may not be relevant for certain positions.
Ensure you check the spelling and grammar on your CV.
Ensure you have details of at least two referees who can provide you with good employment references. Potential employers will always check these references during the interview process and this is a minimum requirement for Radley Green to work with you.
